The area shown on the map is in the North River Ranger District, GW&JNF.  It is located in the upper corner of Rockingham County, north of Harrisonburg.  The map shown above is out of date and needs to be revised to reflect the route now proposed by the US Forest Service.  This updated map was released on February 7, 2007 with the scoping notice for the Carr Mountain Trail .

The new official route from the west follows the ridge of Carr Mountain, shown coming in from the bottom left of the map above.  The Beech Lick Run trail will not be used.  On the right side of the map, the official route drops down from the ridge connecting Beech Lick and White Grass Knobs, circling around the head of Marshall Run before crossing over Cabin Ridge, which is off the map to the right.  It then picks up an old trail that circles the head of Lairs Run before emerging at the trailhead shown above at the end of FDR 302.

If approved, new sidehill construction would be required along the east side of Beech Lick Knob and in several other places.  The overall length of the proposed new trail is estimated to be about five miles.
